According to local news outlets, it has been a treacherous week for travel in Greenville County, South Carolina with Newsbreak reporting eight traffic fatalities in less than one week.
With summer in full swing, and vacation and holiday travel ramping up, Upstate has seen an exorbitant number of fatal collisions throughout the month of May, impacting occupants in both single car and multi-vehicle crashes.
Four Killed in Highway 81 Collision
The Journal Online reported two sport utility vehicles collided killing the driver of one and three people in the other. Several others were injured. Medshore ambulance service, several Quick Response Vehicles, and a medical helicopter responded to the scene.
One Person Died and Six Others Were Injured in a Collision on I-385
WSPA.com reported the South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to a crash around 2:18 a.m. near mile marker 23, about one mile south of Fountain Inn. Troopers said the driver of a 2004 Chevy SUV was traveling south on I-385 when they struck a 2012 Kia Sedan in the rear.
After the initial collision, the Chevy SUV continued forward, overturning off the right side of the roadway. Five passengers were in the vehicle, and one was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where they later died.
The other four passengers and both drivers were injured and transported to the hospital.
One Person is Dead Following a Three-Vehicle Crash on I-85
WYFF4 reported the coroner was called to the scene of a fatal car accident in the Greenville area on Sunday morning, May 15. The deadly collision took place at the crossing of Interstate 85 and Pelham Road at around 7:32 a.m. in Greenville.
Troopers said a 2000 Toyota Forerunner was traveling North when it struck another vehicle.
The driver of the Toyota then lost control, traveled off the left side of the road, and overturned crossing the median. The Toyota then landed on top of a Honda Accord.
Troopers said the driver of the Toyota died at the scene, and the driver of the Honda Accord was taken to the hospital by EMS.
One Driver Killed, Another Hurt in Greenville County
Fox Carolina reported the Greenville County Coroner’s Office responded to a crash along Augusta Road near Bessie Road.
South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said the crash happened around 11:28 a.m. on May 1, 2022. According to troopers, the victim was traveling north on Augusta Road when they crossed the center of the road and hit another driver head-on. Sadly, the victim passed away at the scene.
The other driver was transported to the hospital for treatment.
One Fatality in Single-Vehicle Crash in Greenville County
The State reported one person died after their vehicle veered off the road and hit “several” trees and a utility pole, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The Greenville County coroner’s office responded to the crash on May 18, around 3:11 p.m. There were no passengers in the car and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
